Dragon Head...snake tail
« on: January 25, 2012, 06:43:28 am »
I have never finished a longer, individual practice.
Even now I was supposed to do 1000 bows a day for 100 days from Dec 1st, 2011(Zen Master Wu Bong gave it to me) and after 4 days of 1000 a day I changed it into 100 000 without having to do 1000 a day but how many I wish. So instead of 55 000 now, I have completed 25 000 so far.

I have a dragon head but a snake tail. How to have a dragon tail?

Don't say you haven't put of your socks? If so, you need to start from the beginning. *smile*

An eminent teacher said:
"When you promise something, you must do it!"

That is a good attitude (mostly we learn such things from our parents)! Did he also to tell others your promise? *smile* No need for doubts.

Hanzze - yes, but together action is necessary nowadays. Solo zen practice necessary in the past. So sharing my practice and doubts with other zen students is fine these days. What is your practice you do every day? Do you finish what you start?

500 already. thx 4 inspiration.

No, I still haven't finish what I have started *smile* Maybe I haven't even started to start, or I don't know what stopping actually means.
Together action is for sure good to continue. *smile* Sometimes it brings inspiration to stop. ...but what?

Stop wrong practice? I guess not yet. *smile* Still not able to stop. Still grasping after the snake, sometimes to head, sometimes the tail.

Quote
The Tail of the Snake

We human beings don't want suffering. We want nothing but pleasure. But actually, pleasure is nothing but subtle suffering. Pain is blatant suffering. To put it in simple terms, suffering and pleasure are like a snake. Its head is suffering; its tail is pleasure. Its head contains poison. Its mouth contains poison. If you get near its head, it'll bite you. If you catch hold of its tail it seems safe, but if you hold onto its tail without letting go, it can turn around and bite you just the same. That's because both the head of the snake and the tail of the snake are on the same snake.

Both happiness and sadness come from the same parents: craving and delusion. That's why there are times when you're happy but still restless and ill at ease — even when you've gotten things you like, such as material gain, status, and praise. When you get these things you're happy, but your mind isn't really at peace because there's still the sneaking suspicion that you'll lose them. You're afraid they'll disappear. This fear is the cause that keeps you from being at peace. Sometimes you actually do lose these things and then you really suffer. This means that even though these things are pleasant, suffering lies fermenting in the pleasure. We're simply not aware of it. Just as when we catch hold of a snake: Even though we catch hold of its tail, if we keep holding on without letting go, it can turn around and bite us.

So the head of the snake and the tail of the snake, evil and goodness: These form a circle that keeps turning around. That's why pleasure and pain, good and bad are not the path.

How to have a dragon tail?

First of all, instead of doing some yoga practice, you have inspired me to set up a cyber shrine and do some full prostrations . . .  :jinsyx:
. . . which reminds me of a story . . .

I was sitting around discussing prostrations with some Buddhist chums.
The first said that even a 100 done at full speed was demanding physically
Another had done two hundred that morning
another boasted of three hundred
"I have done seven", I said nonchalantly
They looked at me with Bodhisattva envy
"Seven hundred?"
"No just seven."
The envy melted and was replaced with the tiniest glimmer of group pity . . . :brick:

I never did have the heart to tell them my seven were done with full awareness
rather than mechanically  :jinsyx:

OK off to set up my shrine with smug self awareness  :D

Ok, ok. I exaggerated. I have this tendency of writing aggressively - please bear in mind that it is just my karma and I really mean good, not bad.

Some Zen Dharma Combat expressions:
"Dragon head, snake tail.
Tongue has no bone.
Dog runs after a bone.
I am sitting and talking to you.
The wall is white. The floor is brown.
Please teach me.
Thank you for your teaching.
Not enough?
What else do you want?
Why do you want to know this?"

The head of the dragon....the tail of the snake

I must coorrect the name of the topic. I've just listened to ZM's mp3 and he said after the student didn't believe/fight for her correct answer after ZM questioned it:
"The head of the dragon....the tail of the snake"
