Still water

This is a beginner's question but I find I need to hear the answer again.

When I find that experience fear, anxiety, anger, stress, or other mental suffering what should I do? When I find that it returns again and again, often from the same sources, how do I calm my monkey mind?

It's good to see that you're still around... it's been a while.

By letting go... in other words, you need to let go of these things when they arise and the monkey mind will immediately become quiet. This might sound easier said than done, but you might be surprised by the results.

Okay, "letting go" was helpful. I noticed how unaware I was that I was choosing to "hold onto" my suffering for a number of reasons.

But reading more carefully I think you are saying that the moment these thoughts arise I should let them go right away. Correct?  By what method, mindfullness? Perhaps by waiting till later in the day to meditate or until negative emotions magnify I am letting them take root too much. I will try going to mindfullness right away. Much easier said than done of course :)

The process is to first examine the source through meditation, but the end result must be the ability to let go, where if you can't the whole process tends to fall apart. As for waiting til later to meditate on it, it might suffice to say that that you need to learn to chew bubble gum and walk at the same time --- there's no reason to wait, especially if that waiting allows the feeling to magnify.

Hi Fred, Hi Dharma,

Very basic question and a beautiful one.

What i do when those things come to me is that I welcome Them.   ;D

These are the guests in my mind and i simply offer them space in my mind. They are those guests which do not interact with the REAL me. :)

When i don't talk to these guests, they LEAVE soon.. Who wants disrespect? :)

Now the frequency of these guests have lessened. They hardly come and i don't miss them too :)  LOL

Thanks for the response and encouragement Ankush. I heard before the wonderful analogy of the mind as a house with many rooms and visiting thoughts that come and go. You are right that those visitors are not the "real me".

DK, I've given a lot of thought and practicing to chewing gum and walking at the same time. the folks at tree leaf say that our jobs and our homes are our monasteries. I understand that now in a deeper way.

But for me, the more I practice and study the simpler (but not easier) it becomes. It always goes back to meditation and seeing things as they are. That realization that there is no stress, nothing to fear, no good or bad. That is the answer to every question and every obstacle. Yet of course it can't be described,so I find less and less able to articulate my practice or even anything about me beyond small talk.

Hi Fred. 

From your description, it sounds like progress to me --- there's no reason to tinker with it, so just continue your with your current practice as you have been doing.

if its like a constant ripple in a glass of water, leave it and, it settles on its own :)
